![]() A detailed assessment of the individual is conducted initially to establish a specific prescription thus enabling the Prosthesis or Orthosis prescribed to meet each person's specific requirements. This assessment will include questions about current and past injuries, activities the client often participates in and the gathering of other relevant medical information. A physical assessment will also be conducted so it is often most appropriate to wear loose fitting clothing or shorts. If attending for assessment of the lower limbs it is advisable to wear the shoes you would most commonly wear. Advice and information is provided about the pathology and the Prosthetic or Orthotic treatment alternatives are discussed. When the service user and the Prosthetist-Orthotist have agreed on a prescription the manufacturing process will begin. This may involve casting - using plaster of paris, the taking of detailed measurements or both. At a subsequent appointment a fitting will take place where the clinician will check the item is fitting correctly and make any initial adjustments to optimise the function of the Prosthestic or Orthotic device. Education, both verbal and written, is conducted at this time to ensure the user understands how to utilise the device safely. Review appointments are conducted when needed to monitor the fit and function of Prostheses and Orthoses. At these appointments it is common for adjustments, maintenance, repairs and reeducation to be conducted as necessary. Consultation with other medical and allied health professionals is undertaken during this process to ensure we are working as part of a multidisciplinary team. |
